    <p><strong>From Junior Administrator to Director in six years: Joe Webborn’s career journey at Summit Group.</strong></p>
<p>How do you go from applying for an entry-level job to leading a team in the Cayman Islands within just six years? For one Summit Group colleague, the answer lies in saying yes to opportunities, staying organised, and thriving under pressure.</p>
<p>We sat down with Joe Webborn<strong>, </strong>the Client Services Director in our Cayman Islands business to learn more about his journey, mindset, and what advice he’d give to others looking to carve out a rewarding career at Summit Group.</p>
<p><strong>Q: Why did you choose to join Summit Group?</strong></p>
<p>“I actually came across the role somewhat by chance. Like many who enter the trust industry, I didn’t have prior sector experience. I had worked previously in sales, and enjoyed the trade execution and administration side of the role. In late 2018 I found myself searching for entry-level roles in Geneva…and a position as Junior Trust Administrator at Summit Group came up, so I applied!”</p>
<p><strong>Q: Can you walk us through your career journey within the Group?</strong></p>
<p>“I joined Summit Group’s Geneva office in 2019 as a Junior Trust Administrator and after a year I was promoted to Trust Administrator. I completed the STEP Diploma and received full STEP membership in 2022, when I was promoted to Senior Trust Administrator. By May 2023 I had progressed to a Trust Officer role. At the start of 2025 I was promoted to Senior Trust Officer and in May of the same year I was appointed as Client Services Director in the Cayman Islands business. It would be fair to say that it’s been a very dynamic six years with Summit Group – I’ve attended conferences all over Europe, completed a secondment in Bermuda, moved from Geneva to Cayman, and even translated for a diamond-setter!”</p>
<p><strong>Q: Tell us about your current role and the Cayman office set-up.</strong></p>
<p>“It’s a big change from my previous role in the Geneva office; I now have responsibility for ensuring that the business runs smoothly, looking after our clients, liaising with the regulator and attending events as well as overseeing overall operations. We are a small team locally, however we benefit from extensive support from our Geneva office, especially in compliance and client accounting, which enables us to operate effectively and efficiently.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: How would you describe the client base you work with in Cayman?</strong></p>
<p>“Our structures tend to be large, complex, and internationally diverse. We manage sophisticated mandates, often involving operating businesses, tech entrepreneurs, investment portfolios, real assets, and lifestyle assets such as yachts.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: What do you think has contributed most to your impressive progression within the Group?</strong></p>
<p>“Saying &#8216;yes&#8217; early on to challenges, even when I was out of my comfort zone and not particularly confident! The combination of having an open mindset and being adaptable allowed me to take advantage of new opportunities as they arose.  Equally, being willing to shift between teams and client books as needed also helped accelerate my development. Those moments where I took on higher levels of responsibility pushed me to grow. Of course, Summit Group’s willingness to trust people to step up and prove themselves was also key to allowing me to take on these challenges.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: What part has mentorship and internal support played in your journey?</strong></p>
<p>“While I was working in the Geneva office, the senior team were always approachable and generous with their time. Summit Group places strong emphasis on helping their people understand the “why” behind what they do. That foundation has been incredibly helpful to me over the past few years.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: What values or mindset do you bring to work each day?</strong></p>
<p>“Efficiency, organisation and productivity. The nature of the role means there’s always a high volume of work, so prioritisation is key to meet deadlines, manage relationships, and ensure everything is handled correctly. As I’ve become more senior, people management and communication have also become critical parts of the role.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: How do you stay motivated and manage pressure?</strong></p>
<p>“I seem to thrive in fast-paced, demanding environments. I’ve always been quite high-energy and I really enjoy the constant pace of the work. There’s a sense of satisfaction in meeting deadlines and delivering quality service. I also find the sense of responsibility to clients and the team inherently motivating.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: Are there any specific skills you’ve developed throughout your time at Summit Group?</strong></p>
<p>“Organisation, time management, attention to detail, and people skills are all crucial and developing these skills early on was essential. As I’ve progressed, the focus has shifted towards leadership, client relationship management, and contributing to wider strategic initiatives.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: What excites you most about your current role?</strong></p>
<p>“The scope and responsibility &#8211; it’s a unique opportunity in my career to effectively lead a local office and represent the Group in a key jurisdiction. My role is ensuring continuity and maintaining the high level of client service for which the Cayman office is known. In addition, it has evolved to include other important aspects such as strategic oversight, business development, and regulatory engagement. It’s both professionally rewarding and personally exciting to be part of Summit Group’s growth story. We hope to expand the Cayman office and grow our presence in the region. Summit Group is committed to growth both regionally and globally and there is clear ambition to reflect that growth in Cayman as well.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: How do you like living in the Cayman Islands? </strong></p>
<p>“Cayman has a strong expat community and a very active lifestyle, which suits me well. It feels open and easy to integrate into, especially through sport and community events. There’s a good balance between professional life and recreational activities. I also like the climate!”</p>
<p><strong>Q: What advice would you give to someone new at Summit Group who wants to progress quickly?</strong></p>
<p>“Be proactive, say yes to opportunities (even small ones) and demonstrate that you’re willing to take on more responsibility. Make it known when you have capacity to do more and deliver consistently. In a fast-paced environment like ours, people who take the initiative stand out and this can lead to exciting career growth opportunities.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: What’s the best thing about working at Summit Group?</strong></p>
<p>“Variety and opportunity; no two days are the same. For someone like me who enjoys a challenge, it’s ideal. The dynamic nature of my role ensures that each day involves a diverse set of responsibilities. If you&#8217;re curious and open to trying new experiences, there’s almost no limit to what you can get involved in. I’m very much looking forward to the next chapter at Summit Group Cayman.”</p>

    <p>Summit Group, a provider of <a href="https://www.summit-group.com/trust-and-family-office-services/">fiduciary</a>, administrative and <a href="https://www.summit-group.com/advisory-services/">advisory services</a>, has announced the acquisition of R&amp;H Jersey, a well-established Jersey-based provider of trust, corporate and fund administration services.</p>
<p>The acquisition marks a key step in Summit Group’s growth strategy, reinforcing its presence in the Channel Islands and broadening its international service capabilities.</p>
<p>Established in 1972, R&amp;H Jersey is widely recognised as a highly reputable financial services firm with a strong track record in client service. Both businesses will benefit from increased scale and the complementary strengths created through this acquisition. Summit’s recent growth is underpinned by a commitment to excellence, integrity, and long-term relationships.</p>
<p>The acquisition also expands Summit Group’s service offering to include R&amp;H Jersey’s expertise in fund administration and Jersey tax services, complementing its existing fiduciary and advisory solutions. With the addition of R&amp;H Jersey, the Group will comprise a global team of over 370 professionals, with offices in Jersey, Guernsey, Switzerland, the UAE, the Cayman Islands, and the UK. The combined portfolio will encompass private wealth services, corporate services, fund administration, and support for Jersey and UK tax matters.</p>

    <p>This year, Jersey-based Garfield-Bennett Trust Company has reached a proud milestone, celebrating 30 years of private client services on 11th July 2025. From its humble beginnings at a dining room table to a thriving, multidisciplinary team with international reach, the firm has come a long way.</p>
<p>We sat down with Garfield-Bennett’s Founder and Managing Director, William Bennett, to reflect on the journey, the challenges along the way, and his hopes for the company’s future.</p>
<p><strong>Q: What inspired you to start Garfield-Bennett in the first place?</strong></p>
<p>“I wanted to build something personal, creating an environment where clients would feel valued and relationships came first. At the time, I was working within a more rigid legal framework, but things didn’t work out and I found myself looking for the next move.</p>
<p>I felt things could be done differently, and while walking the dogs one day, I decided to take the plunge and set up on my own. It’s funny how good things can come out of negative situations, I never imagined Garfield-Bennett would grow into what it is today!”</p>
<p><strong>Q: </strong><strong>What was it like in those early days?</strong></p>
<p>“It was just me at the start, working from home at the dining room table, until my wife and I went to an auction and bought a couple of old desks, chairs and a filing cabinet. We sanded and varnished them, then turned the dining room into an office. My mother gave me a computer as a start-up gift, and I also bought a printer and fax machine.</p>
<p>It was a standing start. I had no clients and had to get out on the road. I used to travel all over: London, Europe, South Africa… It was hard because I was competing with well-known private client service companies.</p>
<p>A fair amount of grit and determination went into those early days, and I’ve found that attitude never leaves you. It’s challenging, but also exciting!”</p>
<p><strong>Q: </strong><strong>Were there any particular challenges in the early days?</strong></p>
<p>“I’d been in business for one year and had taken on a few clients when I had a meeting with the bank, where I was told my account was overdrawn and had been frozen. They gave a short deadline to get back under the overdraft limit. I went home that morning, feeling like a rug had been pulled from underneath me, wondering how I would overcome this impossible challenge.</p>
<p>That same morning, a contact approached me out of the blue about setting up a structure with Garfield-Bennett. This changed everything, and I went from almost crashing to surviving again within 24 hours. I always tell people to remember that good things can happen in a flash, just as bad things can!”</p>
<p><strong>Q: </strong><strong>What are you most proud of, personally or professionally?</strong></p>
<p>“On a personal level, I’m most proud of marrying my wife, Ellen. She’s been my rock and supported me every step of the way. On a professional level, I’m proud of the team we’ve built; seeing people grow and stay with the company for decades, and maintaining long-term client relationships. That loyalty means a great deal to me.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: </strong><strong>How have you navigated significant industry changes over the years?</strong></p>
<p>“When fiduciary regulation was introduced in 2000, it felt like a big shift. The licensing process with the Jersey Financial Services Commission was detailed. Thankfully, I’d already been subject to annual audits through legal practice, but it was still a learning curve.</p>
<p>Over time, I’ve learnt not to panic when approaching these changes. Stop, breathe, think it through, take advice, and above all, don’t let a challenge overwhelm you. What feels insurmountable at first can often be broken down step by step, and there will always be challenges!”</p>
<p><strong>Q: </strong><strong>What kind of workplace culture did you set out to build?</strong></p>
<p>“One that was friendly, supportive, and open. I’ve worked with some fantastic people in the past who showed me how people should be treated, as well as some others who taught me how <em>not</em> to lead.</p>
<p>We all spend a huge part of our lives at work, so it should be a place where people feel heard and respected. That doesn’t mean being soft, but it does mean being fair and human.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: </strong><strong>How has the team changed over the years?</strong></p>
<p>“It’s transformed beyond recognition. Garfield-Bennett now employs around 34 people, including lawyers, accountants, STEP-qualified professionals, compliance officers, HR professionals, and support teams. But the ethos of care, collaboration with colleagues, and building long-term relationships with clients remains the same.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: </strong><strong>What values have remained constant since day one?</strong></p>
<p>“Never be complacent, there’s always more to do! You are never truly “off duty” as a founder. Even on holiday, if something needs doing, I do it. I probably learned that from my father, who ran his own podiatry practice and always said, “Work or starve.”</p>
<p>You have to stay honest and keep going. Persistence matters, and never giving up is one of the most valuable traits in business. I’ve always believed in taking pride in my work, being accessible, and treating people fairly. Success isn’t guaranteed, and it doesn’t take long to lose what you’ve built if you lose sight of those fundamentals.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: What has leadership taught you over the years?</strong></p>
<p>“That people matter. If you treat your team well, they’ll treat your clients well. It’s important to be honest and authentic, and to understand what motivates your team.</p>
<p>Staying calm under pressure also helps! People remember how you make them feel. If you want their loyalty and best work, you have to earn their respect and be ready to adapt. Leadership is about bringing people with you, not pulling rank.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: Was work-life balance always part of your vision?</strong></p>
<p>“For me, work-life balance has always been a challenge. Running a business requires commitment. I’ve spent many holidays on my phone or laptop, but I’ve never seen it as a hardship. It’s my passion, and I am fully committed to the business.</p>
<p>At the same time, I’ve always tried to create an environment where others don’t have to do the same. People perform better when they are not overwhelmed, and I fully support a healthy work-life balance for my team.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: What advice would you give a first-time founder today?</strong></p>
<p>“Value your relationships, both professional and personal, as they are your greatest asset. You will face setbacks, and you will make mistakes, but staying honest and tuning out the “white noise” will get you through the challenges.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: What excites you most about Garfield-Bennett’s future?</strong></p>
<p>“We joined Summit Group at the end of 2023, which has opened up a world of opportunities. Expanding our reach, particularly into fast-growing regions like the Middle East, is hugely exciting. The pace of development in places like the UAE is phenomenal, and we’re well-positioned to be part of that growth.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: What legacy would you like to leave behind?</strong></p>
<p>“That I was approachable, and that the business always put people first.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: If you could go back 30 years and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?</strong></p>
<p>“Don’t worry, it will be fine.”</p>
<p><strong>Looking Ahead</strong></p>
<p>As Garfield-Bennett celebrates this milestone, it’s clear that while much has changed on the surface since the early days, the company remains underpinned by integrity and a genuine commitment to people.</p>

In addition, we have implemented several practical and environmentally conscious enhancements, such as transitioning from bottled water to filtered tap water and installing a dedicated phone booth to provide team members with a private and quiet space for calls. Beyond improved aesthetics and state-of-the-art facilities, this move supports a more agile and flexible way of working. It empowers our team to operate more effectively whether working in person or remotely.</p>
<p>“Our aim was to create a space that supports our team’s wellbeing and ambition,” says Zaid Al Rawi, Chief Executive Officer at Sanctuary. “We see this move as an investment in our people and in the future of Summit Group. Our new office reflects who we are: a dynamic, people-first organisation that values collaboration, quality, and growth. We’ve been in the office for four weeks now, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive from both staff and clients.”</p>

    <p>Celebrating 30 years of service in any organisation is a remarkable achievement, filled with memorable moments and profound changes. Sarah Honey, Senior Trust Officer at Summit Trust Guernsey, celebrates this incredible milestone on 27<sup>th</sup> March 2025. We take a look back with Sarah at how things have evolved over the years, from the early days of company operations to the dynamic, fast-paced fiduciary environment of today.</p>
<p><strong>Q</strong><strong>: </strong><strong>How has the company changed or evolved since you started 30 years ago?</strong></p>
<p>“Summit Trust Guernsey, as it is known today started off as Goethe Management with around 12 members of staff. After merging with local trust company Aquitaine in 2013, Goethe took the name of Aquitaine Trust and after a few years, Aquitaine went on to acquire Guernsey-based Federal Trust Company in May 2021. A further collaboration took place in September 2021 when Aquitaine and Geneva-based Summit Trust International SA joined forces under the banner of Summit Group. Aquitaine changed its name at the end of 2024 to Summit Trust Guernsey in order to align and integrate with the Summit Group brand. That pretty much brings us to where we are today. So, I have been through a merger, an acquisition and a re-brand – it’s been an interesting journey!”</p>
<p><strong>Q: How has your role changed since you first joined?</strong></p>
<p>“When I first joined the company, I started off in the secretarial department, carrying out basic secretarial work, handling company filings, annual returns and sending out accounts for signature. I used to do a lot of the work on an electronic typewriter – I would spend hours typing up annual returns which is unthinkable now. As email didn’t exist, we used fax machines and the telephone a lot more too! Back then, many Guernsey-based fiduciaries had directors who were based in Sark, a small island in the Channel Islands which is only reachable by boat. I had to produce the documents for signing, take them down to the harbour and put them on the Sark ferry for the directors to sign and return by ferry. Surprisingly, the turnaround was quite efficient and often took only a couple of days. However if anything was especially urgent, a colleague would travel to Sark on the ferry, hand the document to the director for signature and then come back to Guernsey on the ferry! I have such special memories of this era but of course things are much more efficient these days!”</p>
<p><strong>Q: Has your client base changed over the years?</strong></p>
<p>“Yes, our client base has changed enormously – when I joined, we had mainly Swiss and Italian clients, largely influenced by the company’s ownership under a Luxembourg bank. There were lots of Italian and French speakers in the office and it was quite fun to hear my colleagues chatting away in different languages. Today, our clients come from all over the world, and we administer more complex and sophisticated structures.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: What is your most memorable moment?</strong></p>
<p>“There have been lots over the years, but the most memorable moment was an all-expenses-paid trip to Luxembourg quite soon after I joined in 1995. We flew over to Luxembourg on a private jet and were taken to an event hosted in a massive aircraft hangar featuring circus acts and entertainment. The company paid for new staff members to attend this celebration with colleagues from other branches – it was a very special trip.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: How has the pace of working life changed since you joined?</strong></p>
<p>“One of the most notable transformations has been the acceleration of work pace. In the early days, correspondence was largely conducted through letters, with responses taking a few days to arrive, but nowadays there is a need to respond with immediacy. It was always busy even back then and deadlines have always existed, but nowadays, with instant communication, the environment has become much more fast-paced and dynamic.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: What do you consider your greatest achievement during your time here?</strong></p>
<p>“For me, it’s not about one major milestone, but rather the accumulation of small successes along the way. Even after 30 years, learning remains a continuous process. Each day brings a new challenge, a new piece of knowledge, or a new situation. For someone who has remained in a senior trust officer role for many years, I get a lot of satisfaction from increasing confidence in my daily responsibilities, completing a complex task, understanding a difficult process and building long-standing relationships with my clients – these achievements are important to me.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: What has kept you motivated about your work over the years?</strong></p>
<p>“Apart from needing to pay off the mortgage (!), I’ve always enjoyed learning and have got satisfaction from adapting to new processes and overcoming obstacles and complexities. Part of my role requires me to carry out research and I really enjoy this kind of investigatory work. I also have a really good team around me; we help and support each other on a daily basis.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: Are there any particular challenges you’ve faced that have shaped your career?</strong></p>
<p>“There have been many challenges along the way, and adapting to change has been one of the most significant parts of my working life. Whether it was adjusting to new regulations, learning new operating systems, or working with different teams over the years, change has been constant. Even something as simple as integrating new colleagues into the workplace after a merger requires adaptability and resilience. I suppose all of these things have played a role in shaping my professional growth.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: What’s the best part of working for Summit Trust Guernsey?  </strong></p>
<p>“I enjoy the workplace culture at Summit Trust Guernsey – colleagues here are friendly, helpful and caring and there is a really nice vibe in the office. When dealing with the inevitable personal struggles we all face in our lives, working in a supportive and flexible environment is a huge help. Quite a few of my colleagues have been working for the company for a good few years and I have forged long-standing friendships with them. I also still meet up regularly with some colleagues who have left the company.”</p>
<p><strong>Q: What do you hope for the future of the company?</strong></p>
<p>“I just hope the company continues to grow in a controlled manner – we have an excellent reputation in the fiduciary sector and hopefully I will still be able to work for Summit Trust Guernsey in another 10 years or more!”</p>

<p>Citizenship is one of Summit Group’s 5 strategic themes and activity is guided by a Working Group of 6 staff members across our different offices. Their role is to champion our citizenship agenda and lead on environmental, social, and governance initiatives. Key areas of focus are reducing carbon consumption and waste, and regular charity fundraisers to support local initiatives.</p>
<h3 class="h3 text--h3"><strong>The Carbon Literacy Project: Empowering change</strong></h3>
<p>Most recently, The Carbon Literacy Project—a unique and innovative global initiative aimed at empowering individuals to take meaningful action against climate change—worked with 10 Summit colleagues from across each of our jurisdictions, on a comprehensive training programme designed to increase participants’ understanding of the carbon footprint and the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The project aims to create a global network of informed individuals who are committed to minimising their environmental impact.</p>
<p>Joe Ogier from our Guernsey business, Aquitaine Group, was one of the Summit colleagues who benefited from the experience: <em>“The training was really interesting and covered a wide range of topics including practical strategies for reducing our carbon footprint, such as energy conservation, waste reduction, and adopting eco-friendly habits. It was a hugely positive experience and prompted me to look at my lifestyle and to make small but impactful changes.”</em></p>
<h3 class="h3 text--h3"><strong>Local relevance and community engagement</strong></h3>
<p>One of the key features of the Carbon Literacy Project is its emphasis on local relevance and community engagement, which aligns to our citizenship agenda. The programme encourages participants to consider the specific environmental challenges facing their own region and to develop tailored local plans. This localised approach increases the programme’s effectiveness and fosters participant ownership and accountability.</p>
<p>Our citizenship champions are located in each of our offices in Guernsey, Jersey, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom. <em>“Involving colleagues from each geographical area allows us to tailor and support local environment and habitat protection initiatives”</em> explains Gill Baker, Chief People Officer and Citizenship Working Group chair.</p>
<h3 class="h3 text--h3"><strong>Training and accreditation</strong></h3>
<p>Additionally, The Carbon Literacy Project requires participants to undertake several hours of training and an assessment at the end of the course. This is assessed by the Carbon Literacy Project panel and, if successful, leads to individual accreditation for the participants.</p>
<p>Alona Golling, based in our Swiss office, Summit Trust International, explains that <em>“Summit Group was supportive throughout the Carbon Literacy Project. It was a significant commitment as the bulk of the training took place during working hours. I felt compelled to become a part of the Citizenship Working Group as it resonates with my thoughts and values on a personal level, and it was a happy realisation that care for the environment is one of the values of our organisation. Equipping individuals with the knowledge to create change is paramount and I am pleased that Summit Group endorses this approach.”</em></p>
<h3 class="h3 text--h3"><strong>Looking ahead and expanding our impact</strong></h3>
<p>Ultimately, the impact of the Carbon Literacy Project extends beyond individual behaviour change and what Summit Group can achieve on its own. Matt Claxton, Summit Group CEO, who also took part in the project states <em>“As the initiative continues to expand its reach and influence, it helps us as a business make a contribution to the global fight against climate change. <p>All 10 of the Summit Group colleagues who took part in the project have been individually accredited as ‘Carbon Literate’ by the Carbon Literacy Project panel. Furthermore, there are plans for Summit Group to continue its commitment to the project by working towards accreditation at company level as a Carbon Literate Organisation.</p>
